Dehorning or Disbudding of calves is practiced to arrest the horn growth when the horn button is in the form of 'bud'. It is practiced at an early age within month.
Benefits:
1. To eliminate the risk of injury to other animals within the herd especially when cattle is not tied and is open.
2. To ensure the safety of farm workers as when the cattle is in aggression can attack the person close to it.
3. It's also for beautification purpose.
Methods:
Their are two methods being practiced commonly.
A: Electric Dehorning Iron method or hot hard method
B: Chemical Method
A: It's easy and short to dehorn by electric dehorning iron method as it removes the bud of horn by maintaining temperature nor too cold nor too hot.
B: In chemical method we use the saturated NaOH sol. or dehorning paste.
Demonstration of (B) Chemical method.
1. Carefully lay the calf on the ground and control over it completely.
2. Clip the hairs from surrounding area of buttons.
3. The region of each horn bud is rubbed with a piece of cotton wool soaked in surgical spirit to defeat the skin.
4. Apply vaseline around the bud to protect skin and eyes.
5. The stick of dehorning paste is briskly rubbed over the buttons until blood is appeared.
6. Now apply some anti septic and fly repellents
7. Keep the dehorned calf separated from other calves till it recovers completely from wound.
