Seminar & Awareness Walk on World Farm Animal Day


Introduction:

World Farm Animal Day, celebrated globally on October 2nd, is a significant occasion aimed at raising awareness about animal welfare, promoting the humane treatment of animals, and fostering a sense of responsibility toward our fellow creatures. The Faculty of Animal Husbandry at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, observed World's Animal Day on October 2nd, 2023, with a series of informative and engaging activities. This article provides an overview of the event and the key presentations delivered by experts in the field.


The Inaugural Ceremony:

The event commenced with a solemn touch as Asstt. Prof. Dr Sibtain Ahmad initiated the seminar by inviting Hafiz Asad Ali (Dairy Scientist, 5th Sem.) to recite verses from the Holy Quran, followed by Khadija Ilyas (Dairy Sciences, 7th Sem.) who recited Naat Sharif, setting a spiritual and respectful tone for the day.


Dean's Welcome Address:

Prof. Dr. M. Qamar Bilal, Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, UAF, graced the stage with his welcoming address. He underscored the importance of such seminars in emphasising the concepts of animal welfare, comfort, and precision livestock farming.


As, the five freedom points of animal welfare must be upheld, where animals should enjoy:

1. Freedom from Discomfort: Animals should not suffer from harsh conditions.

2. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: Adequate food and water should be provided.

3. Freedom from Disease and Injury: Measures must be taken to ensure their health.

4. Freedom to Express Normal Behavior: Animals should exhibit natural behaviours.

5. Freedom from Fear: They should not live in constant fear.

 

Precision Livestock Farming:

Dairy Scientist Qamar Usman M.Sc. (Hons.) Livestock Management delivered a thought-provoking presentation on "Precision Livestock Farming and its Impact on Animal Welfare". 


He elucidated the effects of PLF on animal welfare. He explored the integration of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Information Communication Technology (ICT), and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) in enhancing animal welfare. Qamar Usman showcased examples of these technologies being used in various industries like Sapphire, HRM, and Universal Dairies.

 

Modern Technologies in Animal Welfare:

International speaker Mr. Wissam Dayoub, an AH Scientist, shed light on "Animal Welfare and Modern Technologies". 


His presentation covered topics ranging from physiological and behavioural aspects of animals to advanced technologies. 


He discussed automatic milk feeding systems, infrared thermography, image processing techniques, ruminal boluses, sound analysis systems, nutritional management, sensor freezer technology, and GPS systems, highlighting the diverse range of technologies employed to improve animal welfare.

 


Enlightening on Light Units:

Dr Fawad Ahmad enlightened the audience about light units such as lux units and foot candles, drawing attention to the importance of light in both the Holy Quran and Hadith.


He explained the effects of light on animal behaviour and physiology, connecting it to the sensor-based technology mentioned earlier in Qamar Usman's presentation. Dr. Ahmad demonstrated sensors, emphasising their significance in ensuring animal welfare.


The Role of Animals in Human Well-being:

Director of the Institute of Animal & Dairy Sciences, Prof. Dr. M. Riaz Virk, delivered a captivating presentation on "Animal Assisted Therapy"


He explored the multifaceted relationship between humans and animals, highlighting how animals can contribute to human well-being by offering companionship, reducing stress, alleviating anxiety, and providing entertainment. Prof. Virk emphasized that animals are not just a source of pleasure but also a gift of beauty.


Conclusion:

The celebration of World's Farm Animals Day at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, reminded us of our duty to protect and care for the animals who will help us to tackle the issues of food security.


Through informative presentations and discussions, attendees gained a deeper understanding of the importance of animal welfare and the innovative technologies that can be harnessed to ensure it. As the event concluded with the dean's remarks, the message of compassion and responsibility towards animals echoed in the hearts of all those who participated.


On World Farm Animals Day, we gather 'round,
To honor creatures, both big and small,
In the care of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry,
They stand tall, proud guardians of them all.

In pastures green, 'neath the sky so wide,
These gentle souls, they do provide,
The sustenance we need for our every meal,
With every bite, their importance, we feel.

Food security, their role profound,
Ensuring meals on tables all around,
With dedication and knowledge, they toil,
To bless our land with fertile soil.

So here's to the Faculty, noble and true,
For their unwavering care, we applaud you,
On World Farm Animals Day, we say,
Thank you for brightening our every day.
