OTHER WAY OF DEALING THE INJURED AND SICK CAMEL by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Younas

The Camel

After the brutal incident of amputation of an 8-year-old She-Camel (Cammie) leg at Sanghar, a lot of discussion have emerged. This cruel and brutal act has been the talk of the town. The brutalized camel in under treatment at a rehab center (CDRS) at Karachi, while the owner, Soomar Behan, is also under trauma, who needs legal and Islamic compensation in the form of “deet” or “qisas”.

Many people are pissed off that such cruel people are also the part of our community. Such people in our society can go so low and hurt the living beings in this cruel way. They are devoid of any iota of love and affection in their hearts for humans, as well as for animals.

Taking care of mutilated animal is must and it’s our obligation which is underway, and many people and Veterinary staff is taking care for the animal on hourly and daily basis. The staff of shelter house is also dedicated and committed to their task of providing sympathetic treatment and care needed by the animal. We all are praying for the welfare and rehabilitation of the camel.

Secretary Livestock

The Secretary of Livestock, Mr Kazim Jatoi, visited the CDRS to get information of treatment on camel as well as freshly injured donkey. Both the animals are getting treatment at this Center. Secretary added that the camels leg is healing. He also mentioned that the injured donkeys leg will be x-rayed tomorrow to determine the next steps in its treatment.

Recurrence of this shameful and inhumane act happened with a donkey in Hyderabad which was also mutilated and transported to the CDRS on last Monday. Looks like that people are habitual of committing such sins and repeating such evil doings. Its a shame on the humanity of doing such heinous, odious, and humanely unacceptable acts with animals. it looks like that people are getting stubborn and away from Allah’s fear and taking exit from the teachings of our Holy prophet MUHAMMAD (PBUH).

Are our law-and-order forces, law makers, justice providers and higher ups have gone to hibernation? The real culprits must be punished publicly before these animals and a lesson must go to the society to behave humanely with all animals.

If Ministers and Senators of the area have pledged for a stern action of these mutilation incidents, what are they waiting for? In a joint statement, they said that Veterinary doctors referred them to CDRS, and rescuing the camel was a joint effort”. These efforts must continue with full zeal and devotion till the job is completed.

NGO

Ms Jahangir, reflecting on the cruelty involved, noted that while their organization often deals with abused animals like home pets cats, dogs and street donkeys etc., this case was an exceptionally severe event. Weve handled cases of abused donkeys, but nothing like this horrific. This is a different level of evil, she commented. The NGO posted on Facebook that Cammie the camel is settling into her new home, with a video showing the camel feeding, a white bandage wrapped around her leg.

“Cammie is in pain, and it was traumatizing for her to be carried into the shelter. But she is eating now and taking in everything around her with those beautiful, intelligent eyes. The NGO said its staff had cleaned the camels wound to make sure it was not infected. A Pakistani company, Bioniks, is supporting the injured animal and working on a prosthesis.

How much it will take?

We believe that treatment is possible, and the staff is working very very hard but what if animal doesn’t heal and survive at its earliest. We have no doubt on the competency of the company and Vets but what if we fix the prosthetic leg to camel after a so long overdoing and painful procedures, what and how much chances of recovery will be? Do we have to use the camel for riding, pulling carts, ploughing field and/or racing? It could not be a bread winner for any family in this condition.

Pl allow me to narrate that some steps and procedures in the near future will not be an easy exercise like: regular care and treatment; arrest of actual culprits instead of unknown suspects; supervised veterinary treatment; expensive medicine; feeding the camel balance diet; providing fresh grass; feeding grass and grains; taking care of wounds (it might take 2-3 month to heal wounds); keeping stomach bloat free; keeping blood deficiency away; blood tests and reports; transfusion of bloods; keeping blood parameters normal; infusion of multivitamins and iron supplements; antibodies and pain killers; calling veterinary experts again and again; visits of higher-ups and dignitaries; unlimited consultations; how many medical boards; mental state of she-camel; crying and braying of camel; fearful of men, crowed or even other camels; visits of officials on daily basis; listen their high claims (who couldnt arrest the actual culprits yet); keeping camel pain free; keeping infection at bay; staying safe and healthy; saving from dehydration; making animal stand up and walk around; prosthetic leg to get and from where, local, India or Dubai; keeping animal standing (on three legs); above all camel rehabilitation; loopholes of FIR; unwilling compromised; back to normal rehab; and return to normal life, etc. etc.

All these steps, stages and phases are not easy jobs, these are a big deal, and all are uphill task especially with an injured camel.

CAP

It may create some activities or testing ability of Veterinary skills but what benefits will be obtained after this big hassle. Do the prosthetic limb will be a permanent solution? Any way we are strong lovers of animal and being CAP patron, we love this sick she-camel too but a disabled animal are of no use to anyone, except a lab subject and a training for house jobians.

The best way to providing relief to the camel and to get rid of all pains and agonies is also given at our hand, to slaughter the animal in Islamic way and distribute the Halal and delicious meat to all poor, needy and hungry people. This is the way we can save some time, money labor, and divert them to help the poor sufferers in the country. Animal has to undergo slaughtering today or tomorrow, it’s better we save these resources for our needy and poor human beings.

This suggestion came from the animal production experts Prof Dr Muhammad Qamar Bilal, the Dean Faculty of Animal Husbandry (FAH) and Prof Dr Muhammad Riaz, Director of the Institute of Animal and Dairy Sciences (IADS) at University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF) to adopt this second option. Better slaughter (zabeh) the camel and distribute the meat to poor people of the area. One way the animals will get relief from the pain and long suffering, the Allah Almighty will also be happy to see this reward full act. Otherwise, this politics, competitions and cold wars will continue and will involve more and more expenses for an unlimited period.

Role of Bioniks

Dr Ovais Hussain Qureshi, Chief Executive Officer at Bioniks is a social entrepreneur based in Karachi, specializing in orthotics and prosthetics services. Since 2016, it has been providing AI-driven prosthetic arms and limbs to individuals with disabilities. I also request the Bioniks Chief to ponder that fixing prosthetic legs and arm to human beings is a superb and rewarding job but putting legs to animals of this size and weight is not easy and sustainable option. I pray for them. I appreciate their efforts, help, cooperation and the work they are doing, but this humble suggestion be kept in mind to be a point of consideration by honorable CEO of the Bioniks and the Secretary Livestock.

Conclusion

The PPC proposes a severe punishment of imprisonment for 2 years, fine for the offense or both to any man harming the life and rendering useless any valuable animal under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1890. The Camel is a living being but silent, a family member of many families which helps in earning bread and butter for them and provides sustenance to their wards.

In short, I may conclude that how smart we may be in treating the she-animal, neither the destiny of camel is in our hands, nor we have control on it. Allah’s sovereign will will prevail, and we might opt the other way (safe, sound path) to help the camel by slaughtering and save coinage, time, efforts, energies, and resources for the needy, poor and hungry people of this poor country.
